How we operate
The way East Sussex Strategic Partnership (ESSP) operates is governed by a Constitution and Terms of Reference .
ESSP is made up of an Executive Board and an Assembly. A range of other individuals and partnerships are involved in the day to day management of the Local Area Agreement.
The Executive Board
The Executive Board provides overall strategic direction, which includes preparing and monitoring the Community Strategy and Local Area Agreement. The responsibilities of the Executive Board are to:
- secure partnership commitment and action to deliver the Community Strategy and the Local Area Agreement, promoting dialogue between partners
- identify the most important shared priorities for improving quality of life in East Sussex , establishing a strategic framework for action by partner organisations through a Community Strategy
- oversee developing and implementing the Local Area Agreement for East Sussex and to report on progress.
The Board meets at least four times a year. For details of our next meeting, see ESSP Executive Board meeting papers .
The East Sussex Assembly
The Assembly advises the Executive Board on local concerns, shared priorities and future action. The Assembly meets at least once a year. The responsibilities of the Assembly, previously known as the Wider Partners Group, are to:
- assist the Executive Board to identify the most important shared priorities for improving quality of life in East Sussex
- consider progress with the Local Area Agreement and Community Strategy and advise on future direction.
Any organisation may ask to be considered for membership of the East Sussex Assembly by writing to:

Operating values
ESSP is committed to a set of operating values that informs and guides all our work. These are to:
- focus on the county of East Sussex as a whole and the needs of all its citizens
- work positively and collaboratively to improve economic, social and environmental well-being, to improve quality of life
- strive to eliminate discrimination, deprivation and to value diversity
- value and respect the contribution of all partners and provide mutual support, irrespective of sector or organisation
- communicate positively the work of the East Sussex Strategic Partnership and its partners.
Guiding principles
ESSP has adopted a set of principles to guide our actions and promote confidence in our work and activities.
- Joined up – to encourage partnership working across organisational and sector boundaries. By joining up with partners we can coordinate and integrate resources, services and planning
- Social inclusion – to make positive efforts to help the most deprived communities in East Sussex
- Equality – to be aware of the diversity of East Sussex communities and seek to include and involve all communities in determining what their needs are and how they can be met
- Openness – to open meetings to the public at a variety of accessible venues across the county and to keep people well informed of progress through regular updates and reports
- Underpinning all of these principles is a desire to improve service delivery through partnership working.
