Healthier Communities and Older People

The overall aim of this theme is to build healthier
communities, reduce health inequalities and improve services for
older people. Our outcomes reflect local and national agendas set
out in a number of key documents including the ‘Choosing Health’
White Paper and ‘Narrowing the Gap’, a strategic framework
for reducing health inequalities in Surrey and Sussex.
The main outcomes we hope to achieve are:
- Improved health for East Sussex residents: promoting physical
health, mental wellbeing and increasing life expectancy
- Improved access to information, services and opportunities
that support healthy, active lives for East Sussex residents
- Improved independence, wellbeing and choice for older people,
people with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and mental
health problems and those living with long term conditions, and
- Improved user, patient and carer experience and engagement.
Focus on... Making Health and social care services better
East Sussex LINk
A LINk is a Local Involvement Network of local people, community groups and voluntary organisations that want to make health and social care services better.
Developing the East Sussex LINk began back in the summer of 2007. Two significant activities took place then:
- The start of an East Sussex County Council Scrutiny Review Board to look at the local authority role of contracting a host organisation for the LINk, and
- The formation of a LINk Working Group by members of existing Patient Public Involvement Forums.
In the autumn of 2007, the LINk Working Group was formally launched and tasked with:
- Exploring, advising and informing the process for developing and establishing an East Sussex LINk
- Helping to identify the support needs required for an East Sussex LINk to be provided by the 'Host Organisation'
- Developing a recommended governance and operational structure for the LINk, and
- Identifying and developing effective methods for communicating and engaging with wider stakeholders (both individuals and voluntary and community organisations (VCOs)).
At the same time a LINk Steering Group was formed to advise and inform the process for procuring a host organisation for the East Sussex LINk, and developing a picture of the existing consultative mechanisms, forums, and networks in East Sussex that have an interest in Health and Social Care.
Both groups have been busy preparing for 1 April 2008 , when the host organisation will be in place and the LINk will established.
