Safer Schools Survey on bullying
More than 3,500 10 to 16 year-olds in schools across East Sussex have taken part in a county council survey about the perceptions of bullying behaviour among children and young people. The surveys give valuable information to the council's Anti-Bullying Team and schools about how they can tackle bullying in the future.
Top-line survey results are encouraging, with over 90% of people who took part saying they felt safe at school and 87% saying they enjoyed going to school.
Seventy one percent also said they had not been bullied in the previous year and 77% would intervene if they saw someone else being bullied. Three quarters of respondents said teachers and staff at their school took bullying seriously, with assemblies and lessons on the subject and posters or leaflets displayed around the school.

The East Sussex Youth Cabinet has taken up the challenge to reduce smoking amongst young people by producing a DVD that shows the real-life effects it can have. This follows the Big Vote 07, in which over 12,000 young people voted 'stopping smoking' as one of their most important issues.
You can view the film on You Tube. For more information about the East Sussex Youth Cabinet and the 'stop smoking' campaign, contact Karen Gregory, at karen.gregory@eastsussex.gov.uk.
